Want to see what slow driving looks like? Here it is:
East course, day 1. Run 3 was best
Exterior and interior cam run 1:
Exterior and interior cam, run 2
Exterior and interior cam, run 3 (best)
West course, day 2, I was really bad. Trashed my first run, got in my own head and sucked on the second, then was too focused on not sucking on the third
I missed the record button on the GoPro on my 3rd and best run, so here’s helmet cam of it. Note how happy/angry I am at the end
Here is my 2nd run from the outside.

Ugh! That is just so many technical elements all at once! It seems that just being inches off the ‘right’ driving line would cost a lot of time. It certainly seems like those courses are designed to separate the good from the great.
The only class winner that I have seen drive in real life was Sam Strano when he came up to our region a few weeks ago to run and I remember being totally blown away by how he was able to make his blazingly fast times look so smooth.

That’s not slow. Slow was my first autocross where I was last and 3.3 seconds behind (on a 40 second course) a Ford Contour LeMons car with left rear suspension that was fucked like you wouldn’t believe. Though I was only 3.7 seconds away from my Dad (who was driving my car as well) which I consider a win when he has 35+ years of experience over me.

I think you have accurately described what most people would consider to be characteristics of a good autocross course.

I’m extremely envious of that enormous space. Most of the lots our club can get are positively tiny compared to that.

I don’t disagree, and considering this is Nationals, I would expect nothing less. My observation is based on having run in 3 different regions and no course I have run has looked anywhere near as challenging these do. I have watched as many videos of these courses as I could to try to pick up any little tips and tricks I could find because of how challenging it looks. I’m confident that I’d be a last place contender and probably would have had a ‘WTF just happened?’ look after each of my runs, hahaha.

Me too. We have a runway at least, but it’s not even remotely this large. And there’s enough space for TWO giant courses and a paddock with 1300 spots.
